Much more attractive in foliage and fruit than the common guava, the cattley guava, Psidium cattleianum Sabine, is also known as the strawberry or purple guava.

The cattley guava is believed native to the lowlands of eastern Brazil.

Dark red skinned guava, with an excellent strawberry like flavor. Fruits are small, to 1.5" around, and the pulp is translucent and very juicy. It some varieties, the flesh can taste pleasantly spicy. The fresh fruit is very perishable when fully ripe and can be kept only 3 to 4 days at room temperature.

Cattley guavas are eaten out-of-hand, prepared in jam and marmalade and used as a tart-filling .
