The day preceding Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, as referred to primarily in Commonwealth countries. The word ‘shrove’ has its origins in the English verb ‘shrive’, to gain forgiveness for sins through confession, therefore Christians were traditionally expected to do confession and penance on the week proceeding Lent (Shrovetide) culminating in Shrove Tuesday. However, the day has since developed into a celebration, including carnivals and parades in some countries, and feasting on fatty foods in others.
