hypersonic technology vehicle (HTV-2)
An unmanned arrowhead-shaped hypersonic plane developed in secrecy by DARPA or the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency. The HTV-2 was designed to reach speed at 20 times the speed of sound through the atmosphere. At such speed, a trip from New York to Los Angeles would take only 12 minutes.
During a test flight in August 2011, the hypersonic plane lost contact and crashed in the Pacific a few minutes after tearing through the sky at Mach 20. An eight-month investigation by DARPA concluded the vehicle lost large portions of its skin due impulsive shock waves which were more than 100 times what the vehicle was designed to withstand.
